Who we are and what we do

Homelessness Defined

The state of being homeless is defined into three distinct areas:

Absolute:  individuals living transiently in emergency shelters, on the street, or in areas unfit for human habitation.

Relative:  individuals staying with friends, family members, often in overcrowded conditions, often referred to as “couch surfing” or “the hidden homeless.”

At Risk:  low income individuals paying in excess of 50% of household income for rent and basic utilities.

Housing Services Program

Subsidized rental units may be provided for low to moderate income householders who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in Grimsby. Clients ‘in residence’ are required to participate in supportive programs and counseling services that will assist in their transition to self-sufficiency over a period of up to 3 years.

Individualized client care plans are created and monitored by GAHP staff in conjunction with community service providers. Individuals may apply directly to GAHP or may be referred by one of our community partners.

Client Services Programs

The individualized programs and services a client receives as part of their subsidized housing agreement address the specific challenges faced by those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in Grimsby. Working together with our partners, services and programs delivered to our clients include life skills, household and financial management, job readiness and employment skills educational attainment and counselling services.          more
